The farming of aquatic animals and plants, one of the fastest growing segments of US and global agricultural economies, is an ecological imperative as natural fisheries are over-exploited. In order to meet our increasing demand for seafood and ease harvest pressure on natural fish stocks, aquaculture production must increase 100% over the next 25-30 years. Aquaculture license plate revenue supports the Harbor Branch-FAU Aquaculture and Stock Enhancement Program in four primary areas: fish aquaculture, molluscan aquaculture, aquatic animal health, and education. Much of the work is directed toward improving the productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of aquaculture.

Project goals include advancing the efficiency of fish aquaculture systems, optimizing culture of the Florida apple snail to restore populations to enhance survival of the endangered Florida snail kite, examining alternate clam species to diversify the product base of Florida shellfish farmers, and characterizing elevated levels of copper and zinc in queen conch in the Florida Keys. Aquaculture license plate funds also support the Program’s Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory, which investigates health and disease issues of aquaculture species, including how ecological changes impact health, reproduction, and recruitment.

Whales are threatened by disease, loss of habitat, and other factors that lead to an average of one stranding per week along Florida’s coastline. Studying these events can help characterize human impacts on marine ecosystems and potential impacts on humans. There are as many as 12 whale species that inhabit Florida coastal waters, including the most endangered of all great whales: the Northern Right Whale, which depends on Florida’s warm winter waters for calving and nursing.

Lighthouse Soccer Foundation, Inc. and New Hope Charities, Inc. are working together to bring the dream of a soccer academy and facility to Pahokee, Florida. The population of Pahokee in July 2008 was 6,598.The median resident age is 26 years and over 2,000 are under the age of 18. The addition of the soccer program will provide enhanced opportunities to attract other children at risk to participate in the program and provide the opportunity to take pride in the community as the program develops. Currently a rough field exists at the New Hope Family Center that can be literally transformed into a “field of dreams” for the local area residents.
